With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills.
Sketch the trees and the daffodils;
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me,
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free.
They would not listen; they did not know how.
Perhaps they"ll listen now.

Starry, starry night:
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze;
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent"s eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue:
Morning fields of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist"s loving hand.

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me,
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free.
They would not listen; they did not know how.
Perhaps they"ll listen now.

For they could not love you
But still, your love was true.
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do.
But I could"ve told you, Vincent:
This world was never meant
For one as beautiful as you.

Portraits hung in empty halls:
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can"t forget;
Like the strangers that you"ve met:
The ragged men in ragged clothes.
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

And how you suffered for your sanity

They would not listen; they"re not listening still.

별이 많은 어느 날 밤,
팔레트를 파란색과 회색으로 칠해봐요.
그리고 내 영혼의 어두운 면조차 볼 수 있는

그런 눈으로 이 여름날을 잘 살펴보세요.
눈처럼 하얀 린넨의 세상 위에
언덕에 생긴 그림자들이나 나무들,

또는 수선화를 그려보고
겨울의 차가움이나 그 바람조차

유채색으로 그려봐요.

나 이제서야
당신이 내게 뭘 말하려 했는지 이해할 것 같아요.
그리고 당신이 온전하게 살아가기 위해

얼마나 고통받아왔는지,
사람들을 자유롭게 해주기 위해

얼마나 애썼는지도요.
사람들은 당신의 말을 들으려고 하지도 않았죠.
어떻게 듣는지도 몰랐을거에요.
하지만, 아마도, 이젠 당신의 말에 귀 기울일지도

모르겠네요.

별이 총총하게 박힌 어느 밤,
빈센트의 푸른 눈속엔
밝고 화려하게 반짝이는 선명한 색깔의 꽃들과
보라빛 안개 속에서 소용돌이치는 구름들이

비춰지죠.
황갈색의 농작물로 가득찬 아침의 들판은
그 색을 바꿔가고,
고통으로 가득찬 상한 얼굴은
화가의 그 부드러운 손에 의해 다시 곱게 변해가죠.

 

나 이제서야
당신이 내게 뭘 말하려 했는지 이해할 것 같아요.
그리고 당신이 온전하게 살아가기 위해

얼마나 고통받아왔는지,
사람들을 자유롭게 해주기 위해

얼마나 애썼는지도요.
사람들은 당신의 말을 들으려고 하지도 않았죠.
어떻게 듣는지도 몰랐을거에요.
하지만, 아마도, 이젠 당신의 말에 귀 기울일지도

모르겠네요.

사람들이 당신을 사랑할 수는 없었지만,
당신의 사랑은 진실한 것이었죠.
그리고 그 어떤 희망도 남아있지 않았던
별이 많았던 그 밤,
당신은 연인들이 종종 그렇게 하듯,

당신의 생명도 앗아가버렸죠.
하지만, 빈센트, 나 당신에게 해야 할 말이 있어요.
이 세상이 이처럼 아름다운 당신을 그렇게 만들어버릴
그런 의도를 가지고 있었던 것은 아니라는 것을요.

별이 총총한 이 밤에,
빈 벽에 초상화들이 걸려있네요.
이름도 없는 벽에, 액자도 없이 걸려있네요.
세상을 바라보면서,

이런 것들을 절대 잊지 않으면서 말이에요.
당신이 만났던 그 낯선 사람들,
누더기 옷을 걸쳤던 초라한 남자,

 깨끗한 눈위에 던져져 부서졌던
은빛 가시를 가진 피빛 장미,

이런 것들을 잊지 않으면서요.

나 이제 당신이 내게 하고자 했던 말이 무엇이었는지

이해할 것 같아요.
당신이 온전하게 살기 위해 얼마나 고통받았었는지,
그리고 또 사람들을 자유롭게 해주기 위해

얼마나 노력했었는지.
사람들은 당신 말을 들으려 하지 않았죠.

지금도 들으려 하지 않네요.
아마.. 앞으로도 들으려 하지 않을지도 몰라요.
