지금은 모두 고인이 된 토이 캘드웰(Toy Caldwell, 기타)과 토미 캘드웰(Tommy Caldwell, 베이스) 형제의 주도 하에 1971년 미국 사우스 캐롤라이나(South Carolina)의 스파턴버그 (Spartanburg)에서 출발 총성을 울린 마샬 터커 밴드(The Marshall Tucker Band)는 1970년대 서던 록의 절대강자로 군림했던 그룹이다. 그들은 록, 컨트리, 재즈 등을 혼합해낸 미국 전통의 소리를 통해 계열 팬들의 흔들림 없는 외길 사랑을 오랫동안 받았다. 서던 록 서클답게 기타 3대를 함께 운용하며 남성적인 음악인 서던 록의 풍채도 훌륭하게 뽐냈다.
마샬 터커스 밴드는 또한 여타 서던 록 그룹들과는 차별되는 소리바다 때문에도 관심의 대상이 되었다. 바로 대나무 피리인 리드(reed) 악기를 정규 편성에 집어넣었던 것. 리드 주자인 제리 유뱅크스(Jerry Eubanks)는 자신의 피리 소리를 통해 듣는 이들에게 남부 시골의 향수를 불러일으켰다. 그의 피리 사운드에 넋을 잃은 팬들은 마치 과거로 추억 여행을 떠나는 듯, 행복한 순간을 만끽할 수 있었다. 고향 땅의 따스한 햇볕과 푸른 잔디가 그들 눈 앞에 환상처럼 펼쳐졌다. 트리플 기타의 거센 파워와 리드 피리의 부드러운 감상성의 황홀한 동거가 자아낸 음악적 효과였다. 마샬 터커 밴드는 이처럼 리드 연주자를 레귤러로 등록하는 용단을 발휘하며 서던 록 역사에 있어 ''같은 듯 다른'' 특별한 밴드로 팬들의 집중적인 몰표를 받았다.
