한때 Fleetwood Mac의 멤버였고 기타리스트로 작곡가로 그리고 보컬까지 맡아 다채로운 재능을 보인 그는 1946년 미국 캘리포니아 태생으로 본명은 로버트 웰치이다 우리에게는 77년과 78년 연이어 나온 Sentimental Lady와 Ebony Eyes가 좋은 반응을 일으키며 그의 무궁무진한 발전을 보는듯 했다 하지만 그의 솔로 활동은 실패의 연속이었고 훌리트우드 맥을 떠난 것 자체가 그의 불행이었다 당시 훌리트우드 맥은 영국 제일의 슬라이드 기타 연주자인 제레미 스펜서의 후임을 찾고 있었고 파리의 R & B 클럽에서 기타를 치며 노래를 부르는 밥 웰치를 발견하고 즉시 그를 영입시켰다 그때까지 블루스 일변도였던 훌리트우드 맥은 밥 웰치의 산뜻한 아메리카 팝스 감각은 훌리트우드 맥에게 다시 한번 재기의 발판을 마련하게 해 주었다 그러나 뜻대로 잘 되지않던 밥 웰치는 75년 그룹을 떠나게 되었고 스티비 닉스와 린지 버킹엄이 들어오자마자 그들은 스타덤으로 떠오르게 되며 세계적인 슈퍼 그룹으로 명성을 얻게 된다 스타가 될수 있었던 기회를 스스로 져버린 그는 이후 그나마 뛰어난 기타연주 실력덕분에 유명한 가수들(롤링스톤즈의 빌 와이먼과 새미 헤이거)의 레코오딩에 세션맨으로 참가하며 기회를 엿보다 Sentimental Lady(77년 빌보드8위), Ebony Eyes(78년 빌보드 14위) Precious Love(79년 빌보드 19위)등을 힛트시키며 반짝 이름을 남기게 된다...
